Tonya Michelle Standifer Kornegay was born August 14, 1976 to the late Reba Mae Standifer and Rufus Cameron. Tonya graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in 1994. She enlisted in the United States Army on the buddy system with her bestfriend, Shon Knight Bordley and discharged after sustaining an injury. Tonya’s light heart and free spirit allowed her to experience many professions and she was no stranger to hard work. Even while battling illness, Tonya was adamant about showing up to her job. She received a medical retirement from Defense Logistics Agency(DLA) in November of 2019. She was always reinventing herself, whether decorating, crafting, training for real estate, insurance adjusting or customer service, she was a great contributor to her family and most of all, a loving mother, aunt, sister, daughter, granddaughter and friend.
In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her dear grandparents, Homer and Joan Standifer and brother Antoine Sykes, whom all affectionately called “Fruit”. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter and son, Sanai and Zion Kornegay (Suffolk), born in the martial union with Corey Kornegay, brothers Christopher Sykes, Sr. (Lekita) (Maryland) and Michael Howell (Portsmouth), grandmother, Earlene Cameron (Portsmouth) step-father, Christopher Sykes (Newport News), step-brothers, Omar Sykes (Emily) (Maryland) and Devin Sebrell (Portsmouth), god-parents (uncle & aunt), Clarence Gaskins (Janet) (North Carolina) and a host of other uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. |
