Annie Gertrude Jones

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.  On Wednesday, December 3, 2020, Annie G. Jones was called to eternal rest.

Annie was born in historic Powhatan, VA on September 29,1950 to the late Richard and Eliza Ann Howell.  She was the third child of eight children, who were raised to be respectful, work hard, and trust in the Lord.  No matter when Annie experienced a problem, she stood on her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”  She is preceded in death by one brother, Richard, Jr., and one sister, Mary Daisy.

She relocated with her parents from Powhatan, VA in the early 1950’s.  She was educated in the District of Columbia, where after graduating from high school in 1969, she furthered her education by successfully graduating from the Federal City College, now known as the University of the District of Columbia.

Annie was married to her devoted husband, the late James Henry jones, Jr., of Chesapeake, Virginia for over 45 years.

She retired after 41 years of dedicated and outstanding Federal service from the Department of the Navy Medical Center, located in Portsmouth, VA.  She was an outstanding employee and more importantly, an amazing person.  Her work ethic was superior.  She stood out at the Navy Medical Center for her exceptional performance and extensive knowledge, after having worked for ten different Command Officers.  She was well-known and the go to person for practically every important personnel requirement needed for making certain key plans were implemented.

Everyone knew that Annie would ensure personnel and staff members thoroughly understood how things were needed in successfully being done in a professional manner.  She was always the first to arrive for duty and make sure the office was ready for business.  In addition, she would say without hesitation, “Let me say this to you…and just one more thing.”

Upon her retirement in December 2011, her final announcement addressed to all staff personnel members was:  Attention, “I Have Retired!”  Annie was indeed rewarded for a job well done!

She was a fantastic cook.  She loved baking her delicious Butter Pound Cakes and scrumptious homemade lasagna recipe.  She could also prepare delicious string beans, which were always a requested dish on special occasions.  She was also very particular about making certain that if she was involved in any events or church activities, she always made sure that there was a plan.  Annie loved to read a lot regarding many different subjects, because she knew that reading is valuable in order to function on a daily basis.  She also thoroughly enjoyed nature, being outdoors and maintain the landscape of her beautiful home.

Annie was a faithful and dedicated member of the Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church, Chesapeake, VA for many years.  She loved the spirit-filled worship services and fellowshipping with her church family.  Due to Annie’s compassionate heart, she served on the Missionary Ministry, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School in support of the church.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sisters, Grace J. Fort, Elizabeth Howell-Williams (Nathan), Florence Howell, and Shirley Howell; one brother, Benjamin F. Howell (Dolores); and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; one great-great niece and one great-great nephew; cousins, and other beloved family and friends.
