“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith.” Marion Parker, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend was transitioned from this earthly life into eternity on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. Though many hearts are heavy with grief, we are comforted knowing that our loved one is free from all pain and is safe in the arms of our Heavenly Father. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”
Marion Parker, affectionately known as “Tight” and Granny (ninety one) was born on May 23, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late August Sessoms and Eugenia Baines. She received her education in the Portsmouth Public School System. Sister Marion was a homemaker and throughout her life, she touched many lives as a domestic worker. With a passion, Marion loved the Lord, her family, her Senior Pastor Joseph A. Fleming and Joe B. Fleming, Pastor Emeritus. She was a faithful member of Third Baptist Church for over forty years. She was a member of the Centennial Sunday School Class and supported all ministries of the church. She was admired for her caring heart and lovely personality. She exemplified the meaning of selflessness in her daily life. She was called “Granny” not just by her grandchildren and family, but by the Ida Barbour clan and everyone who knew her including those she welcomed into her house. She had that magical connection and abounding love for God and mankind. Whatever she had, she was willing to share with others. Her home was a revolving door for anyone who was in need, especially of a meal. “Self-perseverance and a determination to never give up on what you believe in,” was Marion’s motto. With tenderness of heart, we will remember her smile, her lively spirit and her warm embrace which will be cherished in memory by many.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents; husband – Henry Edward Parker; son – Steven Parker; grandson – Steve Edwards; twin sister- Margaret Scott “Slackey”; two brothers – Earl Sessoms (Aretha) and Freddy Sessoms (Wilhelmemia). She leaves to cherish her memory her dedicated children – five (5) daughters – Cynthia Parker, Charlotte Parker, Gloria Avant (Luke), Deborah Caine (Frank) all of Portsmouth, VA and Linda Cameron of Atlanta, GA. Four (4) Sons – Edward Parker, Jr., Alfred Parker Sr., Calvin Parker and Henry Parker all of Portsmouth, VA. Twenty-five grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren and fifteen great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. To God be the Glory! Granny (Tight) has taken flight on the wings of God’s heavenly angels. |
