Deacon John Wesley Hardy “known as the singing Deacon,” passed away peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2017. He was born on May 29, 1928 in Garysburg, NC to the late Virginia Williams Hardy and Jerry Hardy.
He was an Army veteran and worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal mechanic for 32 years in shop 17.
John was predeceased by wife Thelma Jones Hardy, sister Annie Mae Harris, brothers Earnest and Russell Hardy.
He is survived by son, Wesley C. Hardy (Vivian) of Portsmouth, daughter, Karen D. Smith (Rev. Roy) of Portsmouth, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 14th from Noon to 8 pm at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704. A homegoing celebration will be held at New Mt. Nebo RZUA Church, 2515 High Street, Portsmouth, VA 23707 on Friday, December 15th at 11:00 am by Pastor Tarrence Paschell, Sr. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23320.
