Born on December 27, 1944, in Portsmouth, VA, to Melvin and Elois Newby, Melvin was a proud graduate of IC Norcom High School. In 1966, Melvin enlisted in the Army as a combat Air Specialist, serving his country during the Vietnam War. For his dedication and bravery, he was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal.
