William Glen Hurdle, Jr., (affectionately known by some friends and family as “Hot Papa”), age 85, entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Shining Star Residential Home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was born on February 28, 1933 in Nansemond County, Virginia. He was one of 16 children born to the late Eliza and Willie G. Hurdle.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Esper Hurdle, Sr., Russell Hurdle, Catherine Nixon, Evelyn Louise Riddick, Wilhelmina Hardy, Edna Knight, Ella Dabney-Bynum, Joyce Davis and Shirley Lassiter.

He is survived by siblings, Priscilla Mason, Ernestine Cassell, Harriett Hurdle, Curtis Hurdle, Vernon Hurdle, Sr., Carolyn Cannon; three loving daughters, Sonia Doswell, Synlethia Bagwell, Renee Hurdle; one grandson, Archie Phillip Doswell III; and two great grandchildren, Archie Mauricio Doswell and Aria Rae Doswell.

His avid interest in athletics led him to Morgan State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. After graduating, he began his career as an educator in Baltimore County, Maryland. Several years later, he transferred to Plaza Middle School in Virginia Beach, where he taught physical education for over 25 years.  In addition to his teaching duties, Glen coached track and served with distinction as the head coach for the boys’ basketball team. During his career, his team won several local and state tournaments. Glen was an inspiration to the young men whose lives he influenced.

A key element in Glen’s life was his faith, as he was a dedicated Christian and family man. Mark 12:31 “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” describes his caring and kind nature.  He was a man of integrity with a sense of humor and he taught his children to love God, be thankful, and consider the needs of others. He believed in the power of God and rarely missed an opportunity for Christian fellowship. Glen was affiliated with Faith Deliverance Christian Center, in Norfolk, Virginia and regularly attended services until his health would no longer permit him to do so.

Glen enjoyed talking and laughing with his family, friends and co-workers. He loved sports, gospel music, church functions and listening to sermons on the radio.  In addition, he had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing, as his daughters have many memories of times spent at various racetracks. He was dearly loved and will be missed but not forgotten. His family will always love him.

Viewing will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018, from 12 noon to 8 pm.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018, 12 noon at Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA  23704.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA.
