February 25, 1930 - April 21, 2016
Vivian Blount Curry left earthly life for heavenly life with Jesus Christ on April 21, 2016. Blessed with a loving and caring family and friends, she was born to John Jasper Blount, Sr. and Mary Pittman Blount in Rocky Mount, NC February 25, 1930. Her father moved the family to Portsmouth, VA during World War II, for a job in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Vivian was an honor graduate of I.C. Norcom High School Class of June 1947 with two scholarships. She attended Norfolk State University. She retired from the U.S. Government in accounting.
Highly respected in religious and civic circles, she was a community activist and was a life member of the NAACP.
She organized the Cavalier Manor Beautification Council; a small group of residents, who planted and maintained flower beds on the median strips in the Manor. She later spearheaded the drive that closed the big ditch on the Cavalier Blvd. from the railroad track to Greenwood Drive.
She was president for the I.C. Norcom Alumni Association and was very concerned and led a movement that included petitions, picketing and boycotting the major clothing stores and other businesses on High Street. These actions, with prayer and faith, pressured the school board and city council to reconsider closing Norcom. Today Norcom retains its proud legacy as an accredited diploma granting high school.
In an effort to preserve the beauty of and gain ownership of the beautiful Lake Cavalier in Cavalier Manor, she spearheaded the formation of the Lake Cavalier Corporation in 1993 and was its president for eleven years.
As an active member of her beloved church, New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, she helped her husband, who was chairman of the trustee board, establish the tutorial ministry of the church.
Vivian was predeceased by her parents, her brother, John Jasper Blount, Jr.; her son Tyronne V. Askew and her daughter, Ann A. Wright. She leaves to cherish her memory those whom she loved and who loved her in return: her husband, Warren F. Curry; her son, James Askew, III of Stone Mountain, GA; her daughters, Melonii A. Wilson (Isaiah) of Stafford, VA; and Dawn A. West of Portsmouth; stepdaughter, Lisa Curry of Charlotte, NC; brother, Eric L. Blount (Pamela) of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016, 12 Noon at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Hatton Street, Portsmouth, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth NAACP. Corprew Funeral Home in charge.
