Virginia Dixon

October 28, 1921 - April 15, 2020

Virginia Mae Evans- Dixon was called home to be with the lord on April 15, 2020. She was the youngest of six children born to Herbert and Hattie Yates- Evans on October 28, 1921 in Suffolk, Virginia, Southampton County. The family relocated to Nyack, New York in 1928 in order for Herbert to later find employment at Haverstraw Brick Yard. Hattie was employed as a domestic worker while they raised their children. She confessed her love for the Lord and joined the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Nyack and was baptized by Rev. William A. Johnson that same year. Ginamae, as she was lovingly called by her family, graduated from the Nyack Public School System in 1940.
It was in Nyack where Virginia met her future husband, Louis Dixon. The couple was united in Holy matrimony on April 4, 1941. The Lord blessed them with four children. The family attended services and were all active members of the Pilgrim Baptist Church. Virginia served as President of the Ladies Usher Board for many years, a member of the Helping Hand Club and the church clerk among various other church duties. She found permanent employment as a seamstress at the Louis Hornick Curtain Company in Haverstraw, New York, where she retired in 1983. To supplement the family’s income, Virginia did some domestic work and waited tables for a local caterer all while raised her children. In 1986 she and Louis relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia. The couple then joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. William S. Hampton. She resumed her service to the Lord by serving as President of the #1 Ushers Ministry for 20 years. She continued to attend Worship Services as long as her health allowed.
Virginia enjoyed life and delighted in a variety of activities. She and Louis were members of the Air, Land, and Sea Travel Club, which gave them opportunity to visit many vacations areas in and out of continental US. She volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels, read to the children at the local elementary school, a member of the Hearty Hikers, the XYZ Club, biking, bowling, sewing, and has even participated in dance competitions with her favorite partner, Louis. The Dixons loved to entertain family and friends in their home whether it was a backyard cookout or a formal dinner; a trait Virginia passed on to her children.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband (2002), Her father (1960), her mother (1968), one sister, Elizabeth (1994); four brothers, Russell (1978), Thomas (2000), Wallace (2004) and John Lee (2012) and one great grandson, Justin (2013).

She leaves to honor her memory, three daughters, Gail Royster (Richard) of Suffolk, VA; Jacqueline Pittman of Portsmouth, VA; Rachel Melton (James) of Milford, DE; one son, Mark E. Dixon of Ocoee, FL; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Clayton, Dana, Erin, Qiana, Lauren, Cassandra and Kyle: fourteen great grandchildren; one extraordinary niece, Brenda Glass of Suffolk, VA; one Goddaughter, Monique Evans of Hagerstown, MD; numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family and her very dear friends at the Portsmouth Senior Station, Mayfair House Assisted Living and the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church family.
