February 28, 1952 - May 10, 2017
Vernon Reginald Williams, affectionately called “Reggie”, humbly answered God’s call from labor to reward on May 10, 2017. Reggie was born February 28, 1952, the youngest child to Willie Williams, Sr. and Lucille Smith Williams, who both preceded him. Educated in the Portsmouth Public School System, Reggie graduated in 1970 from I.C. Norcom High School, and received his B.S. Degree in Physical Education / Recreation in 1975 from Norfolk State University. Reggie served as a supervisor until his retirement with the Portsmouth Department of Parks and Recreation.
Reggie began his Christian walk at Celestial Baptist Church in Portsmouth, and was instrumental in planting and establishing Hampton Roads Gospel Assembly in Norfolk, where he served faithfully with his wife Pamela and daughter Reagan. He served on the Advisory Board and functioned as a deacon from 2004 until 2011.
As an avid Washington Redskins fan and a sports enthusiast, he often debated and commentated with his closest friends, regarding sports events, which was one of his favorite pastimes along with fishing. He was recognized as a family man in Portsmouth and a true friend to many. He was well-known for being a grateful man and would always say, “I won’t complain.”
Reggie leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife of 24 years, Minister Pamela Harris-Williams; two daughters, Danita B. Bryant (Mitchell), Saint Petersburg, Florida and Reagan D. Williams, Portsmouth; three sons, Reginald C. Williams, Portsmouth; Calvin Harris (Charlene), Hampton; and Tedrick Green (Jada), Portsmouth; six grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia W. Creekmur, Portsmouth; a brother, Edward Williams, Annapolis, MD; an aunt, Bernice Jenkins, Raleigh, NC: a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and family friends.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 12 Noon to 8 pm and a wake service will also be held on Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Service will be on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 12 Noon at Celestial Baptist Church, 1439 Mt. Vernon Ave., Portsmouth, VA 23707. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum, Chesapeake, VA.
