With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Sylvia Francis Krigger, who was born on June 1,
1941, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Sylvia, the daughter of the late Verson Anderson and Ruth
Anderson Terry, peacefully departed from this world on May 16, 2023, in her residence located
in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Sylvia received her education in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she attended I.C. Norcom High
School. During her high school years, she distinguished herself as the Secretary of the National
Honor Society and held an esteemed position as an officer in the Future Business Leaders of
America. Sylvia's dedication to academic excellence led her to graduate as the Salutatorian of
the class of 1959. Continuing her pursuit of knowledge, Sylvia earned a baccalaureate in
Business Administration from Hampton Institute upon graduating in 1967.
Following her graduation in 1967, Sylvia moved to New York, where she was a Business Administrative
Staff Analyst for the New York City Government's Department of Mental Health. Sylvia was passionate
about her career and loved the opportunity to serve the New York Community through her intense and
exceptional talent of preparing statistical information, researching accounting data, and producing
reports based on research. Over her tenure with the department, Sylvia grew in her role and became a
leader within the department. Her impeccable work ethics armed her with a stellar track record of
leading cross-functional teams to formulate and execute financial strategy in line with great business
growth. Her wealth of knowledge overflowed in her dedication to assist interns. She eventually took
charge of the intern development program, where she mentored many of the company's future leaders.
After 36 years of dedicated service, Sylvia retired and was recognized for distinguished service for the
City of New York.
Following her retirement, Sylvia would frequently return home to Hampton Roads to assist with
caring for her mother, Ruth, as she battled with Alzheimer's. While assisting with the care of
her mother, Sylvia suffered a brain aneurysm that would change the course of her life. With
faith in God, natural tenacity, and support from her family, Sylvia recovered from her
aneurysm. She relocated to Hampton Roads permanently, assisting her mother until her
unfortunate passing and supporting her family.
In her twilight years, Sylvia was as active as ever. She frequently attended church with her
nieces and nephews, took road trips with her friends, and played an active role in the
upbringing of her great-nieces and nephews. Wherever she went, Sylvia was a voice of wisdom
and the life of the party, never hesitating to educate her family on the importance of
meditation, mindfulness, and a strong relationship with God, all of which she would focus on
heavily following the recovery.
While Sylvia's physical presence may have departed this earthly realm, her profound love,
indelible impact, and unwavering strength will forever endure in the hearts and minds of all
those fortunate enough to have known her. Sylvia is survived by her younger sister, Barbra A.
Brown, along with her nieces Melanie Johnson (Bernard Johnson) and Barbra Moore (Albert
Moore), her nephews Johnnie A. Brown and Kevin Brown (Shanea Brown), as well as a
multitude of cherished great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Sylvia will be fondly
remembered for her quick wit, unyielding spirit, and her deep love for God and family.
Flowers and cards may be sent to Corprew Funeral Home.
