Our beloved family member, Samuel Hill, passed away on October 11, 2023.He was born in Tillery, Halifax County, NC on December 7, 1929, to the late Frank Hill and Eliza J. Perkins. After his mother’s death, Samuel moved to Harlem, NYC to live with relatives where he eventually met and married Johnnie Mae McAlphin in 1953. They built a loving family together and were married for 59 years until Johnnie Mae’s passing in 2012. After a few years, Samuel remarried his second wife Kimyetta Monique Brown-Hill who he has been happily married to for the past eight years. Although they did not have children together, Samuel loved her kids as his own and vice versa. They lived a wonderful life full of adventure and love. Samuel was a man of faith completed his early education in NC and NYC before working at the Sayco Doll Factory until he was drafted into the US Army in 1951 during the Korean War. Serving with the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion on the front lines of combat, Samuel showed courage and tenacity. After a year in combat duty as a Private, he worked his way up to becoming a Squad Leader. Upon completing his military service time, Samuel utilized the G. Bill attended several trade schools where he became a Master Electrician. This led him to employment with NYC Mass Transit Authority where he was a dedicated manager. Subsequently relocating to Portsmouth, Virginia, he spent the brightened up any room. He greatly enjoyed family gatherings as well as everyone in their car for visits with relatives & friends in NY, VA, MI, NJ, and NC. He was a skilled handyman and often spent his time repairing appliances, automobiles, and renovating homes with a song on his lips. He had a great passion for grilling and would often use his trusty ‘Coleman’ gas grill at various locations. Samuel was also an avoid supporter of his them to reach their highest potential. Samuel is preceded in death by his parents Frank Hill & Eliza J. Perkins, his first wife Johnnie Mae, sisters Otelia Hill & Corine Hill, brothers Frank Hill, O’Neal Hill & Andrew Hill. He leaves behind a lasting legacy and is survived by his current wife Kimyetta, his children Cassandra M. Bright, Cora E. Hill, Samuel D. Hill Sr. (Elaine), Michael Brown, Brandon Gilreath, Vanessa Long, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren & many other relatives & friends.
