Robert L. Reeves
On July 11, 2023, God in His infinite wisdom peacefully brought to a close the earthly life of Robert L. Reeves. He was born on November 30, 1932 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late James and Rachel Reeves.

Robert’s devotion to his family was unparalleled, always ensuring they felt cherished and loved. His kindness, humility, and selflessness made others feel instantly at ease in his presence. With a strong work ethic, he lived a life filled with purpose, both in his service to his community and his country. Robert enjoyed engaging in hobbies that brought him joy. Among these activities, he loved landscaping, traveling, hand-dancing, and playing chess.

Robert graduated with honors from Booker T. Washington High School in 1949. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Virginia State University in 1953. A distinguished military career awaited Robert, as he entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in July 1953. He served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge in 1956, after which he continued his commitment to the Army Reserves, faithfully serving until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel after 28 years of remarkable service.

In 1956, Robert joined the United States Postal Service, remaining there until his retirement in 1990, after 38 years of creditable service. While working for the Postal Service, Robert concurrently pursued his love for music. For many years, he served as organist for various churches in the Tidewater area. He was a life member of the Portsmouth-Suffolk Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Robert leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Jacqueline Reeves, a daughter, Sonia Reeves Harvey (Gary) and a son, Carl Ford III (Victoria), his grandchildren, Sharisse Hill, Brittany Hill, and Tre’Nycole Ford, and great-grandchild, Harlei A. Hill-Nichols. In addition, he is survived by two special nieces, Jacqueline Hughes and Ayesha Hughes, along with numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Margaret D. Reeves of 46 years, and his dear siblings, Victoria Walton, Etta Wooten, Dr. James M. Reeves, Joseph N. Reeves, and Earl M. Reeves.

An ardent believer, Robert found solace and inspiration in his faith. For over four decades, he was a member of New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville), finding fulfillment in worshipping alongside his spiritual community.

A Celebration of Life service for Robert was held on July 22, 2023, at New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville). He was laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Corprew Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Virginia. A future date will be set for full military honors to salute and honor Robert for his faithful and dedicated service to the nation.
