October 23, 1947 - September 15, 2017
Raymond Coker, 69, of 273 Elm Avenue, Portsmouth, died early morning on Friday, September 15, 2017, surrounded by his loving family after being under hospice care.
Raymond was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Alonzo Sr. and Dorothy Isamay Coker.
In Mr. Coker early years, he served in the Air Force and was employed with USUI International Warehouse until 2007. Some years back before illness took its toll, he was a frequent visitor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of New Abundant Life Christian Center of Norfolk, VA under Bishop Spencer H. Riddick. Mr. Coker was educated in Portsmouth Schools and graduated from I.C. Norcom High where he performed as a tuba player in the band, to where he would ride his motorized scooter down to the Fish Bowl every year to see the parade, and join with his Masonic Brothers. Mr. Coker was a brother and friend belonging to the Masonic Mason for years where he served his community with Harim Temple 23 Lakeland Lodge #52 of Florida.
Surviving are his three children, son Raymond Coker Jr.; daughter Lawanda K. Coker; son Roderick T. Coker; brother Michael Coker; baby sister Charlene A. Coker-Williams; brother-in-law Alastair “Wolf” Williams; adopted daughter Nadine Olden; grandchildren Elaina M. Coker, Aariyana Simon-Coker, Dahmari Cobb, Tyrique Richardson. He was predeceased by his loving wife Rosetta E. Coker, brother Alonzo Coker Jr. and Leroy Coker Sr.
Mr. Coker AKA “Big Daddy” known to all his nieces and nephews Tiffany, Emma, Toye, LC, Mariah, Morgan, London, Ammon, and to a host of aunts and uncles, Bermuda in-laws, family and friends. Although Mr. Coker experienced many trials with health and illness, his foremost desire was to have a closer walk with GOD. Raymond, we love you and will miss you, but know God loves you more.
A wake service will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704.
