Mother Narcey Jane Watts, a resident of Portsmouth, VA, went peacefully to be with her Heavenly Father on August 2, 2017 at the age of 83. She was born in Dunn, North Carolina on September 14, 1933 to the late June and Ella Oates. Mrs. Watts was an endearing and peaceful woman who married to the late Allia Watts on January 12, 2005 in Portsmouth, VA.
Mother Watts was an avid follower of the Lord. She joined New Mount Vernon Baptist Church in 1964 where she enthusiastically devoted her life to be a servant of God. She served on the Relief Usher Board as well as other capacities such as Vice-President, Missionary and President of Tidewater Usher’s Association, a faithful member serving for two years from 1980 to 1982. She later joined New First Bapitst Church (Taylorsville) from 1983 to 2005. She continued her unwavering servitude on the Female Usher Board, Five-W Club, Van Driver and feeding the hungry. She joined First Baptist Church – Elm Avenue on November 16, 2014 where she was named Mother of the Church by the late Pastor Gregory Thomas. She was also a member of Eastern Star Chapter 52.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jesse B. Oates, Elwood Oates, Lonnie B. William, Delbert Oates and O’Dell Oates; two sisters, Ida Mae McKoy and Christy Mae Williams and four nephews, Windell Oates, Lawrence Oates, Charles McKoy and Bobby McKoy, and her very special pet and soul mate, Bo Mitchell.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one aunt, Bonnie Bell McNatt (95); cousins, Carrie McLean (87); godson, Linwood Baker, Sr.; great great niece, Destiny Morton; eight nieces and four nephews; two goddaughters, Shanna Boyd and Makita Anderson.
A “Special Thank You” from Mother Watts, to her dedicated caregivers, Shawnte Vaughan, Alice, and Miki Hendericks; her dear friend, Helen Silverman; co-worker, Casper Turner and her deepest gratitude to her church family who were so thoughtful and loved her dearly.
Viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, from 12 Noon to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017, 10 am, at First Baptist Church Elm Avenue, 1025 Elm Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23704. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.
