Portsmouth – Melvin Lewis Newby, 79, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on December 3, 2024, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. Born on December 27, 1944, in Portsmouth, VA, to Melvin and Elois Newby, Melvin was a proud graduate of IC Norcom High School. In 1966, Melvin enlisted in the Army as a combat Air Specialist, serving his country during the Vietnam War. For his dedication and bravery, he was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medal. Returning to Portsmouth after Vietnam, Melvin poured into his community by coaching little league sports and a thriving career of 38 years of dedicated federal service at the National Defense Distribution Depot at Norfolk Naval Base as a Foreman Supervisor. Retired since 2007, and heavily involved in auxiliaries at Celestial Baptist Church including but not limited to the Deacon Board. Melvin spent most of his time serving God and the Mt. Hermon community. In 2011 he was inducted into the IC Norcom Athletic Hall of Fame.
Aside from his community contributions, Melvin lived for his family and they were his greatest source of pride and joy. Known for his warm presence, Melvin’s legacy extends beyond his family to the countless lives he touched through his teachings and friendships. Melvin is survived by his wife of 58 years Edna; three daughters, Antoinette Newby, Toinette Newby and Melba Henry (Ron); his sister, Patricia Ann Newby; and six grandchildren, Melvin M.
