May 23, 1940 - December 23, 2016
Marian Elizabeth Boone Gist, affectionately known as “Bunchy,” peacefully transitioned from this life on December 23, 2016 while on a family vacation in California.
Marian was born on May 23, 1940, in Portsmouth, VA, to Ollie Cornelius Boone and Emma Irene Cobb Boone. She was a resident of Durham, NC.
Marian graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1958 then moved to New York where she worked in the field of IT as a data operator. At age 24, she married her husband of 20 years, Ronald V. Gist, Sr. (d). She had six children.
Marian started her faith journey at New Hope Baptist Church of Pughsville, VA, and most recently served as a choir member and missionary at Union Baptist Church, Durham, NC.
Marian loved her family. Like her mother, she made yeast rolls every Sunday morning. She also loved to drive. It was not unusual to find her on the road to church services, family events, and especially to visit her beloved grandchildren.
Marian was predeceased by her parents, her sister Etta Boone English and brother Raymond Boone. Missing her presence greatly are her children: Lorraine Johnson (Joseph), Ronald V. Gist, Jr. (Angela), Rev. Virgilla Elizabeth Gist, Dr. Adrea Gist Theodore, (Dickens), Captain Douglass M. Gist, and Russell A. Gist (Tishania); her siblings: Ollie Boone, Jr., Ann Binford, Melvin Boone (Paula), Marie Jones (Dwight), Hollis Boone (Ann), and Diane Foster (Nathan); her grandchildren: Lauren, Joseph, Amber, Olivia, Andrew, Monet, Ania, Emma, and London as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Marian was a true giver. In lieu of flowers, you may consider supporting her legacy by making a donation to one of the following organizations that she supported:
