Margret Anne (Wilkins) Pierce 84 of Portsmouth, VA, transitioned peacefully at home on December 12, 2021. She was the loving wife of the late Bishop Hiawatha Pierce Jr. for over 50 years.
Mother Pierce was loved by many and was known in the church as “the dressing lady”, comedian, and a songstress. She was born and raised in (little) Washington, NC, on January 4, 1937, to the late Jack Reed Wilkins and Olive (Wallace) Wilkins. She was educated in the Catholic School system, and her greatest job was caring for her husband and her family as a homemaker.
It was no secret of how much she loved her and cherished her family. She is survived by her four sons- Hiawatha (Monica) Pierce III of Charlotte, NC, Michael (Rita) Pierce of Frankfurt, Germany, Ronald (Tammy) Pierce of Hampton, VA, and Jonathan (Tamika) Pierce of Portsmouth, VA.; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother- Jack (Terry) Wilkins JR. of Louisburg, NC; three sisters- Ramona “Kitty” (Carvin) Springer of Boston, MA, Gail “Robin” Jackson of Rolesville NC, Joyce Sullivan of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mother Pierce was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Olive Wilkins, two sisters Elnora Staten, Addie Butler-Maynard.
Mother Pierce was a faithful member of Rose of Sharon UHC of Suffolk, VA, where she was the choir director until her husband became Pastor of Jerusalem UHC and served by his side at the church for over 40 years. She was a faithful member at Holy Temple UHC until her health declined. She held many titles: President of the Noon Day Prayer Band, member of the Bishop Wives and Widows Council, member of the United Holy Church of America General Church Mothers Board and was appointed by the late Bishop Thomas E Talley as the Convocation Soloists.
Mother Pierce enjoyed the family seafood nights at her home with family and close friends, enjoyed shopping for hats, always had something funny to say, and spending time with her sisters.
Mother Pierce will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver, and faithful Dedicated Woman of God. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her and knew her.
