On September 15, 2021, at 6:02am, roll call was taken and Mamie Chappelle-Shaw answered to her name at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
Mamie was born July 3, 1943, in Scotland Neck, NC, to the late Jesse Lee Jones and Emma Lee Mitchell. After graduating from Brawley High School in Scotland Neck, she moved to Newark, New Jersey. From her marriage to Herbert Gary of Scotland Neck, their union was blessed with a daughter, the late Yvette Gary of New Jersey, and a son, Ronald Gary of Portsmouth, Virginia. Later in life, Mamie was married to the late William Chappelle-Shaw of Newark, New Jersey. After retiring from the Veterans Administration in Lyons, NJ, she moved to Portsmouth, VA in 2008.
Mamie was a beautiful soul, kind and caring. We love her and will miss her ; she will never be forgotten.
Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-Yvette Gary and grandson, Rahman Gary of New Jersey.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son-Ronald Gary of Portsmouth, VA; two sisters-Alice Harris of Suffolk, VA and Linda Jones of San Diego, CA; an aunt-Carrie Kelly of San Diego, CA; two granddaughters-Eboni Gary and Tiffani Gary of Ladson, SC; one grandson-Dorian Stallings of Portsmouth, VA; two great-granddaughters-Cherish Freeman and Chloe Freeman of Ladson, SC; two great-grandsons-Amir Wright and Khalif Smith of Ladson, SC; god-daughter Chrystal Young of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Ethel Washington of Columbia, SC and Marie Hanna of Portsmouth, VA.
