August 4, 1935 - May 29, 2017
On the early morning of May 29, 2017, God called for another angel to surround his throne. Mamie was born on August 4, 1935 to the late Overton Gray and Ida Mae Washington. She was educated in the Portsmouth School System. She was known as one of the best school bus drivers in Portsmouth Public schools. Many students have fond memories of riding bus 101 with Mrs. Mamie.
Mamie was an active member of Zion Baptist Church for over 60 years. She served faithfully on the U.G. Wilson/Faithful Servants of God Usher ministry. Growing up, she was an active participant in the children and youth ministry and Girl Scouts. Mamie was a loyal supporter of the New Horizons.
Mamie was married to the late Robert Marshall and that union was blessed with four children, Jeffrey Lynn Gray, Linda Marshall Slatter, Brenda Champagne, and June Marshall.
She is predeceased by her brothers, Harry Gray and Curtis Gray. Her memories are cherished by her children, Jeffrey L. Gray, Linda Marshall Slatter, Brenda Champagne (Marlin) and June Marshall; siblings, Debbie Wilson, Linda Gray, Wendell Gray, Junius Jones (Debra); grandchildren, Tenisha Gray, Sadé Wright, Craig Comfort, Fantasia Wilburn, Jeffrey Artis-Gray, Brenna Wilburn, and Khadijah Comfort; great-grandchild, Malachi Roberts; Special friends Jackie Howell, Francis Twitty, Shirley Deramus, Ethelyn Ingram and Alfreda Knight; and a host of relatives and friends.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017, from 12 noon to 8 pm at the funeral home, with a wake service also on Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm. A celebration of life service for Mamie will be on Friday, June 2, 2017, 11 am, at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Hatton Street, Portsmouth, VA 23704. Interment to follow at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth.
