Maggie Marie Jernigan Lee, formerly of the 900 block of Horne Ave., departed this life on January 18, 2018. She was born May 28, 1932 in Ossining, NY to the late Rev. Louis V. Jernigan and the late Maggie Heckstall Jernigan. She was reared in Windsor, NC.
Maggie attended and graduated from the public schools in Windsor, NC. She worked and retired as a dietitian in the Portsmouth Public Schools. Maggie was a member of Third Baptist Church for over 50 years where she sang in the Gospel choir. Maggie loved to sing and as a young child she often rendered solos as requested.
Marie, as she was affectionately known by her family, was married to the love of her life, the late Hoover Lee, Sr. for 48 years. To that union five children were born, Donnie M. Gilliam, Hoover, Jr., Marion Yvonne Lee, Michael L. Lee, and Donald M. Lee. (Michael and Donald pre-deceased her.)
Maggie Marie is survived by her loving children, Donnie M. Gilliam (Stanley); Hoover, Jr. and Marion Yvonne Lee; one daughter-in-law, Charmaine; 8 grandchildren, Derick, Dana, Alonza, Tolan, Altovise, Ryan, Jasmyn and KaCen; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carola A. Jernigan; sisters-in-law, Jannie L. Kirk and Doris Lee; brother-in-law, Joseph M. Deering; one aunt, Lillian Vashtie Green; a god-daughter, Cynthia P. Batson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704 from 6 pm to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 11 am at St. John Baptist Church, 2200 Effingham St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Rev. Joseph B. Fleming, Pastor of Third Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23320. Corprew Funeral Home in charge.
