Early Tuesday morning, December 13, 2022, the angel of mercy stopped by to join hands with Luzara Mitchell Johnson as she reminiscenced about Monday’s worship and fellowship with Chaplain Tiffany Wenfree and Courtney Halloway, MSW. Mother Johnson stepped into her shouting shoes as they played “Old Happy Day.” What a Hallelujah time?

Luzara Mitchell was born July 5, 1928, to two loving and Christian parents, the late Ruben Mitchell and Edith Beale Mitchell of Potecasi, North Carolina.

Luzara was the fifth of ten loving children and is predeceased by her husband (Lee), two sons Robert and Bernard Johnson, grandson Darion De’Relle Johnson, and six sisters and three brothers.

She left to mourn her passing two daughters Beverly P. Wilson (David), Pamela Johnson-Williams (Robert), two sons Henry “Pete” Johnson (Regina), Barry Johnson (Cynthia), one sister Goldie Slade and one brother David Mitchell (Yoko), numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, family, and friends.

The Mitchell family moved to Portsmouth in 1945. She attended and fell in love with Noble Street Baptist Church. She joined as a member on June 13, 1946. Luzara loved serving with the Sunday school and Senior Choir.

As time went on, she met the love of life and the late Lee Andrew Johnson. They moved out of state for a few years but later returned to Portsmouth and she rejoined Noble Street Baptist Church. She continued to serve with the Senior Choir, church school, Vacation Bible School, Deaconess Board, and as a Sunday School Teacher for the Class of Esther.

Luzara loved to work with the community Charles Peete Little League base team, Dedicated Helpers, Missionaries, Senior Citizens Bible Class, Camp Out Reach, Inspirational Scholarship Committee, Women’s Group, Wilson Ward Civic League, Duer’s Court of Clothe #273, Bells and Bow’s #191, Maple wood Park and Glendale Reunions, the Parc Peace Shelter for baltered women and children, and various nursing homes, where she took the word of God to console distraught souls.

Luzara thanked God for allowing her to serve in each of these groups. May God continue to bless each of them and the Noble Street Baptist Church family. She was grateful to her family for the beautiful and special birthday celebrations. She also gave thanks to God for the 94 years He gave her here of earth.
