Louis Clarence Coward, aged 82, passed away on March 29, 2023, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born on
April 30, 1940, to Clarence and Helen Coward in Kirkwood, Louisiana. Louis graduated from Duquense
High School in Pennsylvania. He furthered his education at Wilberforce University in Ohio, one of the
first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), before serving as a torpedo man in the United
States Navy for 20 years. After his retirement, he became an instructor at the New England Institute of
Technology, where he had previously been a student before joining the team at Raytheon as an analyst.
Louis was a technology enthusiast and a sci-fi lover with an exceptional tenor singing voice that he
passed down to his daughters. He enjoyed singing karaoke with his family and telling great stories. His
family and friends will always cherish his memory.
He was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Clarence Coward; his children, James Williams, Terry
Robinson, and Creola Fanning; and his grandchildren, Juawann Coward and Carmen Whitaker.
He is survived by his siblings, Creola Atchison, Patricia White, Faith Brown, and Ronald Coward. 6
children: Larry Robinson (Virginia), Cynthia Adams, Helen A Thomas (James), Jonathan Maurice Coward
(Stacy), Eugene Monteiro, and LaQuanda Green (Jason). He is also survived by a host of grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 7, 2023, from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM at Corprew Funeral Home at (1822
Portsmouth, VA 23704). A celebration of Louis's life will follow immediately at 3615 Victory Blvd. Suite
105 Upstairs Portsmouth, VA 23701. The Military Honors will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 11:00
AM at the Albert G Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery (5510 Milners Rd. Suffolk, VA 23434).
