On Saturday, March 2, 2019, as the evening sun went down God silently and peacefully beckoned Sister Elder Lena K. Heidelberg home to receive her reward.

Lena King Heidelberg was the fifth child born to the late Clarence & Georgia (Wright) King on February 25, 1924 in Norfolk, VA. Her siblings preceded her in death. Lena was educated in the Norfolk public school system where she excelled in academics. There she met and married her high school sweetheart Elder Colonal M. Heidelberg. From that union were born three sons Kenneth A., Melvin L. & Andrew I. Heidelberg. Melvin & Andrew preceded her in death.

Colonal & Lena heard the calling and joined Temple Beth El in Norfolk, VA in 1949. St. Lena was a fundraiser, soliciting daughter and sat as first soprano in the Norfolk tabernacle. She contributed to the civil rights movement by participating in the bus boycott as well as supporting and encouraging her youngest son Andrew in the integration of the Norfolk public school system (Norfolk 17) despite the KKK’s threats of bodily harm and cross burning on her front yard.

Lena worked at the Lenox movie theater as assistant manager, as office manager for Dr. Rodolfo Cejas, within the Norfolk public-school system and several jobs as a domestic worker. The family moved to RI in the 1970s where St. Lena continued to praise and worship her God. While serving as a Sabbath school teacher for the youth, St. Lena was made Sister Elder on August 30, 1987 by the late Elder Preston Mangana at 1st Tabernacle Temple Beth El, Providence, RI.  Sister Elder  was a staunch advocate of  the Sabbath Day. Lena was also known for her fresh rolls. Sunday mornings consisted of hot buttered rolls right out of the oven and a cup of coffee while neighbors and loved ones would drop by to pick up their special orders of rolls.

After Lena retired, she enjoyed traveling between CA, RI & VA to spend time with the people she loved. The love of family was very important to Lena. It didn’t mean that you had to be born of her, just loved by her which made you family. With complete faith in God and trust in His infinite wisdom, this chapter in Lena’s book of life is closed. She leaves in God’s loving hands her devoted and adoptive sons Kenneth A. Heidelberg & Arnold Justice, caring & loving daughters-in-law Pamela (aka PamaLena) & Luressa Heidelberg; fourteen beloved grandchildren, seventeen precious great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and a wealth of other relatives and dear friends.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019, from 6 pm to 7 pm at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA  23704.  A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2019, 10 am at Temple Beth El, 3927 Bridge Rd., Suffolk, VA  23435.  Interment will be in Belleville Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
