JULIA KATE POINTER, 88, went to be with the LORD on Wednesday, August 28, 2018 with her family by her side.  Julia was born in Fairmont, North Carolina on November 15, 1929 to the late Willie and Arnetha Jones. She was a loving mother and devoted wife of 52 years to the late James E. Pointer Sr. She retired from Portsmouth Public Schools after 26 years. She loved the LORD and was a faithful member of the New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church for over six decades.  She was a dedicated member of the Senior Choir and Missionary Ministry.  Julia was a formal member of the Eastern Star and the United Order of Tents.

Embodying her memories are five daughters, Sandra Parker, Diane Thompkins, Gail P. Smith (Steve), Julia R. Henderson (Henry), and Kathy F. Forbes (Crosby); three sons, James E. Pointer Jr., Reginald Pointer (Michelle), and Marvin A. Pointer; one sister, Dr. Martine Spencer; one brother, Algie Jones; 27 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased her son, Ricky Pointer; sisters, Margaret Leonard, Helen Ballard, Janet Jackson, Linda Roper, and Shirley Roberts; brothers, Rev. Charlie Jones , Rev. Rayford Jones, Nedward Jones, Rev. Elliot Jones, and Richard Jones; and son-in-laws, Sherwood Parker and James Thompkins.  The family will receive friends and viewing will be held Friday, September 7, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm at the New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 3555 Victory Blvd, Portsmouth, VA 23701.  A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Noon at the Church.  Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA.
