James Lomax Harper, 68, a native of Chesapeake, VA departed this life on October 26, 2024 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles H. and Elleen Harper. He was a former member of Divine Baptist Church. James graduated from Deep Creek High School in 1973 and went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in History from Virginia State College (University) in 1977. He became a member of the Nu Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in 1975 and later a life member of the Delta Omega Chapter. He was a dedicated teacher, starting his career in Dinwiddie in 1978 and retiring from the Federal Correctional Institution in Petersburg in 2007. He’s survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay; his daughters, Dana (Mark) Green of Chesapeake, VA, Kristen of Haughton, LA and Alana of Chesapeake, VA, grandchildren, Makayla, Peyton, Houston, Hassan and Mark III and two brothers, Willie C. Marlins III (Mary) of Suffolk, VA and C. Hilery (Zina) Harper of Richmond, VA. A wake will be held at J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Home located at 102 South Ave, Petersburg, VA 23803, on November 6, 2024 from 6:00 -8:00 P.M. The celebration of James’s life will be at First Baptist Church, located at 236 Harrison St, Petersburg, VA 23803, on November 7, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. His interment will be November 8, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, located at 3920 Airline Blvd, Chesapeake, VA 23321.
