Hilda Cooper Code peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 23, 2022. She was born on February 2, 1947, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to the late George E. Cooper and the late Louvenia Lucas. Although she was the only child, she grew up in a household with her cousins, who were like brothers and sisters.
Affectionately known as “Duck”, Hilda was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington Senior High, Class of 1965. In her young adult life, she joined Hillsdale Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC. After graduation, she worked as a secretary until she moved to Virginia. She retired from Chesapeake Public Schools System after many years of service at Camelot Elementary School. Hilda was a devoted member at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Portsmouth for over 30 years and served on many ministries until her health failed.
She leaves to cherish her memories of three children-Hanako Cooper Smalls (Antonne), Crystal Cooper McCall (Toronto) and Carlton Leon Cooper (Yvette); and seven grandchildren-Gabrielle A. Smalls, Chaya A. Smalls, Kingston Y. Cooper, Zaryn A. Cooper, Irie Amor Cooper, Kyrin L. Cooper, and Tiannia Matthews. She was surrounded by many family and friends during her last days which provided her great comfort.
