Hazel Elizabeth Artis Vaughan was born along with an identical twin sister on July 29, 1943, in Courtland Virginia to the late Charles and Pearl Lee Faulcon Artis. She departed this life on September 21, 2019, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Hazel was a loving spiritual person with a great sense of humor. She graduated from Hayden High School in Franklin, Virginia, where she was in the top ten of her graduating class and went on to pursue a successful college education at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Along the way, she held positions in management and even worked as a catalog model for a major retail chain.
Hazel loved the classroom both as a student and a teacher. She became a business and math teacher and later earned her Master’s Degree at Wright State University. She completed her postgraduate education with a Master’s Degree in Education and School counseling certification and retired from the Dayton Ohio Public school system in June 2005 after 35 years of service.
Hazel was passionately dedicated to educating and tutoring students; especially those from socially vulnerable backgrounds, supporting their needs both academically and psycho-socially. During her years as a high school counselor, she actively supported tutoring programs, career fairs, and innovative learning opportunities for at-risk youth.
Hazel is preceded in death by both parents Charles and Pearl Artis and her brothers Robert Hamlin and Lessly Artis. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters DeLena “Sunnie” Vaughan and Diona Vaughan Mankowitz, her granddaughter Selena Aungst, and son-in-law Rob Mankowitz. She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-two years, Del M. Vaughan.
Hazel also leaves behind eight loving sisters: her identical twin Mable Grayson of Cleveland, OH, Shirley Chatman of Norfolk, VA, Bessie Lawrence and Mary Whidbee of Chesapeake VA, Francine Peeples and Patricia Johnson of Virginia Beach, Juanita Artis of Landover, MD, and Louise Artis of Franklin, VA. Sister-in-law, Sarah Hamlin of Suffolk, VA, sister-in-law Yasmin Moodie of Boykins, VA and Aunt Fletcher Artis of Severn, MD. In addition to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
