Gladys Elizabeth Stewart was born on May 3, 1934 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Hermon Jones and Caroline V. Jones. She celebrated 86 years of promise and exchanged her temporal existence for God’s richest blessing- an exceeding weight of glory which will last forever. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 surrounded by her family.
Gladys accepted Christ at an early age and subsequently became a member of St. Paul Holiness Church. Later she moved her membership and joined the Trinity Faith Diamond family where she served as a member of the Deaconess Board. Gladys, “Mom” loved to pray, read her Bible and witness to anyone she encountered about her Lord & Savior. She enjoyed sharing scripture and would often have bible study with her children/grandchildren, having them recite bible verses to introduce, instill and keep them in the word. James 1:22 reads: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” It is refreshing to know that Gladys emulated that. She modeled at all times how to be a “Virtuous Woman” (Proverbs 31). “She opened her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” “She stretcheth out her hands to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.” Her favorite scripture was Psalm 91 and “The Blood” and “Precious Lord” were the sacred songs she held dear to her heart. Her favorite musical artists were Shirley Caesar and Lou Rawls.
She was a loving, caring, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Gladys always thought of others and put them first in her life. “To know her was to love her.”
Gladys was the second oldest of 10 children. She is preceded in death by her husband Rudolph Stewart, her parents Hermon Jones & Caroline Jones, her two children Erinda L. Jones and Michael Stewart, as well as two sisters and five brothers.
Gladys leaves to cherish her loving memories her children Carolyn Nicholson (Curtis) of Chesapeake, VA; Sharon Jones, Anthony Stewart, Rosalyn Mills, Linda Potts and Rhonda Stewart all of Portsmouth, VA; Reginald Stewart of Detroit, MI; Pamela Sheppard (Shawn) of Suffolk, VA; and Emmell Stewart of Norfolk, VA. Her siblings Robert Jones (Maewarren) of Chesapeake, VA and Patricia Moore of Suffolk, VA; 27 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, cousins and lots of “adopted” children, nieces and nephews.
