May 22, 1929 - February 12, 2018
The Honorable George Minor, Jr. slept quietly into eternity on February 12, 2018, at Carrington Place in Chesapeake, VA. He was born May 22, 1929 to the late Amy Minor Jarvis and George Minor, Sr., in Norfolk County, now known as Chesapeake, Virginia.
He graduated from Norfolk County High School, and continued his education at Howard University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. He then furthered his career at Howard University School of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate.
George married the love of his life, the late Mamie Yvonne Hamlin and to this union one son was born, George Minor III. He was a devoted father, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend, as well as a caring and devoted neighbor.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he received the rank of First Lieutenant.
George was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Charles E. Diggs Men’s Choir; Adult Sunday School Teacher and the Presbyterian Men’s Organization as well as an ordained Elder.
George was no stranger to work. Having retired from his own private law firm (George Minor, Jr., Attorney at Law) in 2017 after 50 years. He also served the State of Virginia and City of Portsmouth as a Commissioner in Chancery and Substitute Judge.
He was a member of Epsilon Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; member of the National Bar Association; Virginia State Bar Association; member of the NAACP; member of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Cavalier Manor Civic League and various other organizations.
He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory: his only son, George Minor III; daughter-in-law, Alice Minor; three grandchildren, Marcus Minor, Derek Minor and Stephanie Minor; four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 11 am at Community Presbyterian Church, 801 Tazewell St., Portsmouth, VA 23701. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23320. A wake will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704.
