Elwood J. Cephas, son of John and Helen Cephas departed this life on Sunday March 13, 2016 at his home in Portsmouth, VA. Born on January 5, 1941 in Baltimore, MD, he was the youngest of five. He graduated from Carver High School in Baltimore, MD and also attended Baltimore Community College. While in Maryland, he worked at Baltimore County Department of Social Services. He was baptized at an early age and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD.
He was married to the former Doris Brooks and from that union they were blessed with one son, Emmanuel Cephas and one daughter, Michelle Cephas. He was later blessed with 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He relocated to Portsmouth in 2006 where he married the former Eunice Carson. He attended her church Fellowship United Church of Christ but it soon became HIS church where he was known for serving in Men’s Fellowship and singing an occasional solo. That union also instantly blessed him with three more sons, Ellerson, Matt (Myra) and Paul, along with a daughter Vida (Kenny); as well as 9 more grandchildren and 4 more great grandchildren.
He worked for the last 10 years in the Portsmouth Public School System.
Elwood loved his early morning drives, grocery shopping, shooting pool, buying flowers from Lowes and fishing. But his favorite thing was to watch Westerns every chance he got. He is survived by his wife Eunice Cephas, his one brother Leroy, all his children, his 14 grandchildren (Emmanuel Cephas, Jr; Katrina Johnson; Mr. & Mrs. Gregory & Teayna Cephas; Jesse Grant; Irving Vincent; Terrell Butler; Kim Lyons; Ellerson Lyons, III; Paul Lyons, Jr; Bryanah Lyons; Joshua Lyons; Dena McCall; Montoria Valentine; Charity Lyons; and Olivia Lyons) along with 9 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be at 11 am, Friday, March 18, 2016 at Fellowship United Church of Christ, 1402 Gust Lane, Chesapeake, VA 23323. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA.
