On the 22nd of February 1926, Elsie Hamlin was born to Helen Ferguson and Colin Hamlin in Emporia VA.
She was the sister to Sarah Hamlin Short, Odell Hamlin Jones and Fred Hamlin. Elsie Hamlin Jones is preceded in death by her Mother Helen, Father Colin, sister Sarah Hamlin Short and her brother Fred Hamlin. Elsie moved from Emporia, VA to Portsmouth, VA in 1932 and attended I.C. Norcom High School.
Elsie Hamlin met and married Eli Jones, Sr. on March 5, 1945. To their glorious union eight children were born, Eli Jones Jr., Mildred Jones Porter, Milton Jones, Wilma Renee, Freddie, Sharon Juanita, Hortense and Maurice Jones.
Elsie is preceded in death by her granddaughter Tracey Diane Jones and grandson Eli Jones, III, grandson Milton Jones, a daughter Mildred Porter and her husband of 67 years Eli Jones, Sr. who transitioned on 18 August 2005.
Elsie was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend and family matriarch of the Hamlin and Jones family all her life. All loved her humor and will miss the stories and jokes she so graciously shared with us.
Elsie leaves to mourn a sister-Odell Hamlin V. Jones; four sons-Eli Jr. (Elaine), and Milton (Diane), Freddie and Maurice Jones; three daughters-Wilma Renee, Sharon Juanita, and Hortense. Left also to mourn her are her nine grandchildren- Steven Porter (Laura), Kenneth Porter (Shelley), Tina Jones, Kevin Jones (Yrral), Keshara Pickett, Lance Ricks, Shelia Bazemore, Darryl Vinson and Keith Vinson; seven great grandchildren- Brittany, Rajee, Steven and Stephanie Porter, Alexis Janaye, Jaylen, and Aniya Jones; four great-great grandchildren-Arianna Hardy, Kendall Porter, Mason Pickett and Layla Roundtree; seven nieces, four nephews and other relatives and friends.
Elsie always found a smile to share with us no matter what was going on and always lightened the hearts of us all.
The family extends a special thanks to all who assisted the family in this special Homegoing service. A precious, happy one has departed from us, but we remember her voice which always spoke wisdom and praises for our God, and the love and admiration for her parents, husband, children, sisters/brother, grand/great children, family and friends. No family was ever as lucky as we were to have Elsie as part of our lives. Also, a special thanks to Carolyn “Cumbo” Jones for all the Skin So Soft, Cranberry Juice and cases of water.
