Ella Louise Payton was born December 4, 1930 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late loving parents William “Wiley” and Ella Mae Batts. Ella, also known as “Sis” was raised in the Mount Hermon community where she was educated in the local schools and was a proud graduate of the 1947 class of I.C. Norcom High school and attended classes at Norfolk State University. She later married her husband of 25 years Stephen Payton.
Ella moved from her earthly home to live in her eternal heavenly home on March 30, 2019 at the blessed age of 88. She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers William “June” Batts, Jr. (Ernestine) and Floyd “Al” Batts (Margaret). She leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted sister Hilda Day, nieces Beverly Otis, Deryl (Smith) Creekmur, Elvira “Peaches” (Smith) Chesson, Janice (Smith) Gregg, Rhonda (Batts) Baily, Rosa Porter, Althea Hardy and her nephew Ernest Smith, Jr. She has a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins and extended relatives in the Tidewater area and Hertford, North Carolina.
Viewing will held on Friday, April 5, 2019, from 12 noon to 8 pm at Corprew Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, 11 am at Third Baptist Church, 461 Godwin St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth.
