Dr. William Henry Harris affectionately known as “Doc” and “Chaco” was born on February 16, 1940 in Newport News, Virginia, one of 11 children born to the late Marcus and Pearl Harris.  He was called home on Friday, December 28, 2018.

 

He attended school in Newport News, Virginia and graduated from Huntington High School in 1958. He attended Norfolk State University and participated in the ROTC program. He graduated from Echols Mortuary College as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He worked at Corprew Funeral Home until he attended Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine and accomplished his goal of becoming a podiatrist. He practiced in his office on Portsmouth Blvd for 30 years and served many patients in the Tidewater area. He was on the podiatry staff at Norfolk Community Hospital, Central State Hospital, and many nursing homes in the area. Upon his retirement from podiatry, he returned to work at Corprew Funeral Home until he retired from funeral service.

 

He served as president of Charles Peete Little League for 10 years and established the junior, senior, and big league baseball teams. He is fondly remembered for taking many baseball players to Richmond, VA to obtain a copy of their birth certificate and knocking on doors to make sure that players had transportation to tournament games.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Marcus and Pearl Harris along with six sisters and three brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 54 years Joyce Troy Harris, son Wilmark H. Harris of Marietta, GA (Yvette), daughter Monique D. Harris of Richmond, VA, three grandsons Michael X. Hopson, Andrew D. Hopson, and Kai Harris-Coles, brother James W. “Dick” Harris of Richmond, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

 

Viewing will be held at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, on Thursday, January 3, 2019, from 12 noon to 5 pm, and a wake will be from 6 pm to 7 pm at Fellowship United Church of Christ, 1402 Gust Lane, Chesapeake, VA 23323. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019, 11 am at Fellowship United Church of Christ.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3920 Airline Blvd., Chesapeake.
