Dorothy Louise Hazel, quietly passed away at home on December 14, 2016 at the age of eighty. “Dot”, as she was affectionately called, was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late Lindsey and Josephine Lawrence-Vaughan.
Dorothy was a member of the I. C. Norcom High School graduating class of 1954. She worked as a certified nursing assistant in the federal civil service and retired after twenty-nine and a half years of service from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Her kindness and compassion was felt by all patients on the oncology ward. Upon retirement, Dorothy continued to work providing nursing assistance and companionship to home bound individuals.
She was a member of Fellowship United Church of Christ for over thirty-five years. She served faithfully as an Ordained Deacon and as a member of the Ushers Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and the Seniors’ Ministry. She also served as the United Church of Christ (UCC), Eastern Virginia Association (EVA) Representative. She was a member of the W. H. Harrison, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #190 for over thirty-five years and was designated a life member. She was currently serving as the Chaplain, and has also served as the President, Treasurer, and Secretary. During that time, she supported the ALA activities for the Portsmouth community faithfully. She was a dedicated and loyal Treasurer for the Portsmouth Prentis Park Civic League for numerous years.
In 1978, she joined the World Order of the Elks, Beauty of the World Temple #40. She served as the Past Grand Daughter Ruler and Virginia State Recorder (1992-1996); a District Deputy for eleven years; a member and District Commander of of the Antler Guard. She was currently serving as Beulah Temple #4 Financial Secretary. She served as a member and held the positions of Secretary and President for the Virginia Council of the Elks. She was designated an Emeritus District Deputy.
On February 9, 1957, Dorothy L. Vaughan aka “Dot” of Portsmouth, VA married her childhood sweetheart, Frederick Hazel, aka “Snookum”. They had played together, roller skated together, and they were high school classmates. Their friendship and love had endured for over sixty-three years until his passing on October 15, 2016. Dorothy was a loyal and devoted wife. As a mother she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren unconditionally. She never missed one graduation or birthday celebration.
She leaves behind two sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren to cherish her legacy: Frederick W. Hazel, Jr. of Dumfries, VA and Julius Hazel of Chesapeake, VA, Sharon Hunt of Alexandria, VA, and Wanda Louise Hazel (formerly Barner) of Chesapeake, VA; Christopher Lewis, Jason Lewis, Frederick “Lamont” Hazel, Kyra Hunt, Miles Hazel, Stanley Barner, Jr., Nigel Barner (Dylesia), and Tory Barner. In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter Brenda Hazel Lewis. Her sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, in-laws, and friends were blessed by her kindness, compassion, and concern and she will be terribly missed by those who knew and loved her. The Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Fellowship United Church of Christ 1402 Gust Lane Chesapeake, VA 23323. The Wake will be held Friday, December 16, 2016 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd, Portsmouth, VA 23704.
