CORNELL HOLT, SR. was born on July 2, 1945 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Roscoe Gray and Elizabeth Holt, and was partially raised by his God Mother, Fannie Nelson. He departed this life on October 22, 2018 at home.
Cornell was baptized at an early age. He attended Union Bethel Baptist Church and served as Trustee faithfully for 18 years. Cornell’s favorite scripture was Psalm 23 and his favorite song was “Jesus is Real.”
Cornell worked for Portsmouth Public Utilities and retired after over 30 years of employment.
One of the things Cornell loved to do when relaxing was watching old Westerns; and he truly enjoyed dining out at his favorite restaurants.
Cornell is survived by his wife, Ethel M. Holt, four daughters, Verdell Porter, Jacklin Hyater (Darryl), Gwendolyn M. Drew (Gary) and Kimberly R. Holt; three sons, Cornell Holt, Jr. (Armethia), Gregory Oliver (Asharah) and Jerod Briggs; 24 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Bradshaw, a very special friend who was like a brother, Jeremiah Coker, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Cornell was predeceased by his two brothers, Leonard Holt, Jr. and Wallace Holt, and an aunt, Christine Cole.
Viewing will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, from 12 noon to 8 pm at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23704. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, 12 noon at Union Bethel Baptist Church, 1817 Jolliff Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23321. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Rd, Suffolk, 23435.
