“I’m free, Praise the Lord, I’m free. No longer bound, no more chains holding me. My soul is resting. It’s just a blessing. Praise the Lord, Hallelujah, I’m free.”

On Monday, November 23, 2020 the angels rejoiced as the gates of heaven opened to welcome Bishop David “Thunderbolt” Powell home to his eternal rest. He was 66 years old. Bishop Powell was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late Paul Powell, Sr and the late Missionary Alice L. Powell. He was the fourth of seven children. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA.

He became a member of Phillippi Church of God in Christ under the leadership of  Pastor T. J. Small.  After receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, God revealed to him that he was called to preach God’s Holy Word. Shortly after, he became a member of St. James Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Pastor B. Small where he served as junior deacon and Y.P.W.W. President of the C.O.G.I.C. Portsmouth District for several years.  After holding these positions, Bishop Powell became a licensed C.O.G.I.C. minister, Sunday school teacher, district evangelist  and the third assistant to the pastor.   He also served as soloist and drummer.  After serving with the Church of God in Christ, Bishop Powell became an ordained elder and pastor of Gethsemane Holiness Church, Norfolk, VA. Bishop Powell also became the chairman elder with the Church of the Everlasting Saints, Bishop J. L. Johnson, presiding.  Under his anointed teaching and preaching, many souls were saved and lives were dramatically changed. Bishop Powell was well known for being a praiser and a preacher.
When he opened his mouth to preach, his voice sounded like thunder roaring. That’s how he got the nickname “Thunderbolt.” In addition to that nickname, Bishop Powell was affectionately called “Butternut.” He acquired that name because he loved to eat the candy bar, Butternut. You are blessed to be a blessing, and oh what a blessing he was to his children and his family.
In addition to the church family of Preacher’s House Ministry, he leaves to cherish his memory three children, Minister David Powell, Jr. (Jonalaya), Shavone Powell, and M. Powell. The mother of his children, C. Powell. Two sisters, Elder Maria P. Giddens (Andrew), Christine Bell. Two brothers, Timothy Powell (Sharon), Micheal Powell (Michelle), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his father and his mother. His legacy lives on through his children.
