Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Betty Jean Holland Cook Hines, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, evening, September 27, 2016.  She was born on August 7, 1932, in Princeton, West Virginia to the late Arthur Holland and Bessie Cole. As a young child she moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she spent most of her youth and young adulthood. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, class of 1950. She attended the Star Stenographic School of Business, the McLean Business College and graduated in 1961 from the School of X-ray Technology at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  She was the President of the PTA at the Carver School and served on the council of the Southern Region of the YWCA in Winston-Salem, N. C.  In Virginia, she continued her education and attended Tidewater Community College, and earned certificates from the American Institute of Banking and the BETA Corporation. For many years Betty worked in the banking industry including Wachovia, State Street, Sovran, and BB& T.  She started as a teller and was promoted to supervisor and helped to implement the credit card system when they first began. Betty was an extremely gifted, talented and smart person; a leader in all of the jobs/careers she pursued. At both Kate Bittings and Wachovia Bank she was appointed into positions because she scored the highest of anyone on their placement exams.  This was unprecedented for an African American woman at that time.   In addition, she was always active in the community and was honored by the Chesapeake Community Service Board where she served from 1988 – 1994. Early in her life Betty married the late Roy B. Cook and out of that union four children were born. For a short while she lived in Boston, Massachusetts and worked at the State Street Bank and Trust Company. In 1969 Betty relocated to Chesapeake VA and married the late Murray L. Hines. They lived a vibrant, active life and traveled across the United States twice sight-seeing and visiting family and friends.  They were truly go-getters. They enjoyed being socially active and were admired and loved by many.  The Lord Jesus Christ was always at the center of their lives as they raised and nurtured a blended family, which was featured by the Christian Broadcast Network, 700 Club, in 1994 and 1995. While raising their children they were active members at First Baptist Church Crestwood where Betty was a trustee, and during the latter years were faithful members of Tidewater Baptist Temple in Chesapeake, VA.

Betty was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Isaac Holland; Bobby Bruce Holland, her twin; Jacob Holland; Mary Leontine Stowe; and Carlton Holland. She is survived by her children R. Lee Cook (Sally), Roy Cook, Rovia Cook, Robin Cook-Nobles (Maurice), Velvet Jones, Cecil Hines (Kathleen), Gregory Hines, Alphonso Hines (Sonia), Derek Hines (Ann), Murray Lenwood Hines (Leticia), Mark-Anthony Hines, Alan Hines (Dolores), Joy Wilson (Keith), and Bridgette Hines; sisters-in-law Bernice Holland, Ozelle Holland and Sarah Austin; and grandchildren, Romand Lamont Cook, Amil Nyerere Thomas Cook, Maurice Nobles III, Rayvin Cook, Amyr Al-Amin Cook, Angelica Rene Wilson, Marques Keith Wilson, Murray Langston Hines, Desmond Hines, Justin Hines, Tracy Hines, Nikkiba Jones Powell, Darrius Jones, Darrell Jones, Harold Jones, Tamika Jones, April Hines Turner, Brittany Hines Rosario, Damon Hines, Savanna Hines, Ashley Hines, Sidney Jordan, Ciara Hines, Kendall Hines, Jasmin Hines, Sylvester Hines, Quincy Hines, Alisha Hines Schoennagel, Juanita Hines, Alphonso Hines, Jr., Mark-Anthony Tynes, Markayla Hines and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and cousins, as well as a large number of extended family members, friends and colleagues who will miss her dearly.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016, 12 Noon at First Baptist Church South Hill, 3633 Galberry Road, Chesapeake, VA  23323.  Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.  The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the funeral service.
