Quietly, on the afternoon of March 16, 2021 while her daughter so sweetly sang to her, our beloved Barbara Jean Hyman, known to all as simply Jean, slipped away and put on her Angel Wings. After what we now know must have been a long and courageous battle, one that she carried privately and I am sure it was to spare us the worry and to trust solely in her Master, He called her home.
Barbara Jean Hyman was born to Marion Lucille Williams and Marshall A. Sykes on March 20, 1938. Jean transitioned to her Heavenly home just four days short of her 83rd birthday. God chose Heaven for her Re-birth celebration venue. Jean attended I.C. Norcom High School, prior to moving to New York where she lived for several years. Upon her return to Portsmouth, she became a member of First Baptist Church South Portsmouth where she served faithfully as the Church Treasurer, a member of The Trustees Ministry, The Deaconess Ministry, Missionary Ministry and participating member of the Anointed Voices of Praise, Young at Heart Ministry, the Women’s Ministry and Co-Ministry Leader of the Pastor’s Aid Ministry.
Barbara Jean was first married to Leigh R. Ward and to the union was born one daughter – Clelia Ward Wilson.
On December 26, 1987, Jean married James “Gil” Hyman and remained a devoted and loving wife until her passing. From this union came two stepchildren – Gregory Hyman and Bishop S. Ja’Nine Hyman.
Upon retirement from WAVY-TV 10, having worked there for several years, she became bored. So, at a time, when most people can only envision lots of down time, Jean went back to work. She acquired a position with Towne Bank where she worked another sixteen (16) years and remained an active employee until her health failed her just weeks ago. She genuinely enjoyed her time there. She loved the entire staff but was blessed to have a special bond with two ladies she cherished very much – Marion Fagan and Kelly McCann.
Jean is the first of nine children. Upon the passing of her mother, Marion Lucille Williams, Jean took on the role of “Matriarch” of our family, and she more than earned and deserved the title. Jean is predeceased by her mother, Marion Lucille Williams, her father Marshall Sykes, her sister Leslie Mason and her brother Richard Morris.
She leaves to mourn her husband of 33 years – James “Gil” Hyman; her daughter – Clelia Ward Wilson (Woodrow); two granddaughters – her namesake Barbara Christine Wilson and Jada Brown; her sisters – Dallasine E. Bynum (Fletcher), Joanne Shambly (Michael), Marion L. Gardner, Nina M. Manly, Jacqueline D. Hunter and one brother – Russell C. Morris; two stepchildren – Gregory Hyman (April) and Bishop S. Ja’Nine Hyman. She also leaves to mourn two incredibly special individuals – Diedra R. Ward and Gavin Gardner, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends to include Towne Bank – Old Town Portsmouth and First Baptist Church South Portsmouth family.
Love You For a Lifetime
“Your Husband Gil”
