Our beloved mother and grandmother was called home on February 5, 2021.  With her loving and supportive family by her side, she fought her illness courageously and passed away peacefully at home.

Barbara Ann (Pitchford) Vaughn was born in Gumberry, North Carolina on September 20, 1949.  She was the fifth child to Isaac and Mary Pitchford.

Barbara was educated through Portsmouth Public Schools and completed two years at Tidewater Community College.  She worked at General Electric Company until they closed in the mid 80’s, when she later became the first female fork lift driver.  She then began working at BASF (Virginia Chemical) Corporation in Portsmouth VA, until the closing of the plant in 2007, at which time she retired.

One of Barbara’s favorite outlets was playing softball, centerfield every summer.  She was also fond of basketball and football.  She was a die-hard Redskins fan.  She also loved to swing dance and was very good at it.  She was also the Business Manager of two social and saving clubs, The Bachelorettes and The Les Femmes of Tidewater, which affiliated with the American Legion.  She also took pride in planning trips.

She was married to Harvey Eugene Reid of PA; together they had three children, Felicia (Lisa) Edmonds, Francine Ellis and Harvella (Gena) Reid.  She later married Melvin Vaughn but they divorced after many years.  She then met her long term companion, Tyrone Staton.

She leaves to cherish her memory three children:  Felicia Marchell Edmonds of Chesapeake, VA, Francine Ellis of Chesapeake, VA, Harvella Eugenia Reid (Antonio) of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Mae Ethel Parker of Florida and Mary Ann Davenport (Johnnie) of Norfolk, VA; one aunt, Audie Boone of North Carolina; one uncle, Charles Roberts of PA; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; a son-in-law, whom she considered a son, Kevin Edmonds; and her long term companion, Tyrone Staton.  She has lots of friends, with a special emphasis on “The Girls”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Lee Pitchford, Sr., and Mary Roberts Pitchford; four brothers, James Lover Kee, Thomas Kee, Arthur Wiggins Kee, and Isaac Lee Pitchford, Jr.

“Barbara’s loving spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.  This day is remembered and quietly kept, and we shall never forget, for those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.  Unseen and unheard but always near; so loved, so missed and so dear.  We must remember that God is always there.”
