In Remembrance of Arnette “Gail” Rebecca Frost Slight

Arnette “Gail” Rebecca Frost Slight was called to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Arnette was born on May 15, 1952, to the late Augusta and Rosie Marie Frost of Norfolk County. She grew up in a section known as Gilmerton in Chesapeake, VA. She was the second oldest daughter of eleven children. Gail leaves to mourn her daughters Freda Hart and Angela Suggs; grandchildren Rakiya Slight, Khadijah Slight, Jonathan Martin Sr, and Nathaniel Hart; great-grandchildren Ahm’ir Bivens, London Wallace and Jonathan Martin Jr.; her special friend of 43 years Rosie Harris affectionally known as “T’; two bonus children, Edward Harris and Tirzah Harris and a host of nieces and nephews.

Gail was a graduate of Crestwood High School in Chesapeake, VA. Gail also received a diploma in Physical Therapy from MedStar Health. Gail retired from the federal government after working over 20 years at the White House for the General Service Administration. She was blessed to work and meet several presidents, dignitaries, and celebrities. Working with President Clinton and meeting Coretta Scott King were some of the highlights of her career.

Arnette was affectionately known as “Gail” by her family and friends. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Gilmerton and sang in the senior choir before moving to Washington, D.C. Gail had an angelic alto voice and sang many solos throughout her years in the choir. One of her favorite songs was “Change” by Tramaine Hawkins, and her favorite gospel album was Amazing Grace” by “Aretha Franklin, James Clevland, and the Southern California Choir. While in Washington, D.C., she became a Le Detroit Baptist Church member in Oxon Hill, MD, and attended until her health declined. Gail enjoyed watching television Evangelist Charles Stanley.

Gail became the matriarch of the family after the passing of her siblings and parents. Gail loved her family. Known for telling it like it is, Gail had a fun, loving, and infectious personality; she loved to joke, was outgoing, and loved spending time with her family and friends. She made everyone around her feel special. Her daughters Freda and Angela and their children meant the world to her.

Gail was a total sports fanatic. She loved football, golf, and tennis and could recite the stats for each sport. Her favorite NFL team was the Washington Redskins, now known as the Commanders, and she enjoyed many games watching from the front row at RFK Stadium. Gail enjoyed traveling all around the world and cooking. Her sweet potato pies earned her the nickname Sugar Momma. She had a gentle and caring heart. She would give the clothes off her back. If she did not have it, she would call her girls and say I need you to help this person. Her passions included collecting porcelain dolls and watching movies. She had an extensive and amassed collection of over 300 movies, with animation and action among her favorites.
