Andre Lamonte Copeland, son of Chris Hayes and the late Phillip Copeland was born on March 12, 1974 in Portsmouth, VA. On March 31, 2021 surrounded by love, family and friends God sent his angel down to escort him to his eternal resting place during our sacred “Holy Week.” Andre lived in Portsmouth, VA almost all of his life and was raised with high Christian values. He had given his life to Christ, and prepared himself to accept whatever the Lord had for him.

Andre began his sports careers as a child, playing with the Charles Pete Little League. Continuing as an adult, he was president of the Olive Branch Little League, where he devoted unlimited time, money, and loving spirit to the youth and anyone that would hold a ball. The team won numerous championships. This compassion spilled over to his alma mater, Woodrow Wilson High School where he worked and volunteered numerous days and hours, and coached the JV Softball Team.

Andre attended Woodrow Wilson High School where he first played JV and then was a running back on the Varsity Football Team, leading them to the Virginia High School State Championship in 1991. While at WWHS, he also played on the baseball team. After graduating, he attended Tidewater Community College and began a work career at Costco Club in Norfolk, VA where he worked until his illness.

“Dre” as  he was affectionately called, was a dedicated father, grandfather, nephew, cousin and friend. Everyone was family. If you were not blood related, he befriended you into the family. His love spreaded throughout the community through his smile and high spirit. He touched so many lives, especially that of friends Stephen “Stump” Hale, Reshanna Hale, and Tameka Hall.

Andre was predeceased by his father – Phillip Copeland and 2 sisters – Phylicia Mathis and Nicole Jiles. He leaves to cherish his wonderful life and memory – a brother  Stanley Giles of Portsmouth; 2 sons – Andre Stephenson of Hampton, VA and Jason Copeland of Portsmouth; 2 daughters – Jasmine Copeland and Aleigha Copeland, both of Portsmouth; 6 grandchildren and a special beloved cousin – Latanya Lomax; a special brother – Paul James and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
