“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”  Psalms 30:5

Allen Ladd Lewis was born on December 17, 1950, to Cleveland Lewis and Negaster Lewis of North Carolina.  Allen was the youngest son to this union.  He married the late Janet Y. Lewis and this union was blessed with a son, Markus Lewis.

As a youth, Allen was baptized at Third Baptist Church of Portsmouth, Virginia.  On Thursday, September 23, 2021, his spirit was ushered up by angels to be with his Lord and Savior.

In 1969, Allen graduated from I.C. Norcom High School.  Soon thereafter, he joined the United States Marine Corp.  In 1971, he received prestigious awards:  National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device and Good Conduct Medal Period Commences.  After being honorably discharged, Allen joined the Marine Corp Reserve.  He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  There he worked as a Nuclear Painter for over 40 years and received a host of medals and awards.

He will be greatly remembered by his smile, his love for the Lord, his family, his friends, neighbors, co-workers, for his generosity, his humor, and for kind, encouraging words and advice to others.  In his failing health, Allen never complained.

He is survived by his brothers-Cleveland Lewis and Franchot Lewis of Washington, DC.  His sisters-Maxine Lewis, Denise Lewis, and Bernice Wilson; brother-in-law Donald Wilson, all of Connecticut.  He leaves behind a sister, Armentta Scott of Portsmouth, Virginia;  brother-in-law, Lopez M. Scott of Portsmouth, VA; a son, Markus Lewis; daughter-in-law Deandra Lewis all of Suffolk, Virginia;  daughter in-law Donneka Lacarrol Gibbs of Little River, South Carolina; a son, Larry A. Gibbs of Little River, South Carolina; a daughter, Freda Gibbs-Hutcherson of Stafford, Virginia; son-in-law, Roy Hutcherson of Stafford, Virginia; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grands; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

The family expresses deep and sincere appreciation for all words of encouragement, cards, floral pieces, visits, and act of kindness shown during their hours of bereavement.  May God bless you.
