Alice Mae Martin Gardner was born on November 2, 1923, the 5th of five children to the late Jesse Martin and Ida B. Martin in Severn, NC. Alice attended school in Severn, NC. As a young lady, she attended Mount Hermon Baptist Temple in Portsmouth, VA. In later years, she attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. She later joined Celestial Baptist Church also in Portsmouth, VA. She was a faithful member who worked in various capacities in the churches listed above.
Alice’s professional career was spent working in food service. She was a cafeteria assistant for Frederick Community College (now Tidewater Community College) and I.C. Norcom High School where she worked until her retirement.
On June 24, 1943, Alice Martin Gardner and John B. Hawkins, Sr. of Portsmouth, VA., welcomed a son, Joe Earl Martin to their family. Alice loved to cook; however, she enjoyed visiting her favorite neighborhood eatery, where she would meet new people and engage in casual conversation with them. She was a people’s person and valued being around people while enjoying a decadent meal. Alice enjoyed singing, listening and being surrounded by musical and community festivities. Her favorite food was Yaki Mein and crabs.
On March 27, 2021, Alice quietly departed from this life into eternity, joining her son – Joe Earl Martin; her daughter in law Febbie Martin, and 4 siblings who preceded her in death – Luvenia Boone, Thad-Otis Martin, Joseph Martin and Rosetta Martin Jenkins.
Alice leaves to cherish her memory 3 granddaughters – Febbie Martin, Isoke Martin and Charlene Martin; one grandson – Zurfel Martin. She also leaves to cherish her memory 3 nieces – Beulah J. Brown (husband – Clarence) of Queens, NY; Dorothy Levy of Bronx, NY; and Erbenia Boone of Portsmouth, VA; along with a host of relatives and friends.
A special thank you to her caregivers – Cynthia Smith and Sheryl Leach and nieces – Erbenia Brown and Beulah J. Brown.
